Do Democrats Really Think So Little Of Themselves?
I was reading an editorial at the Wall Street Journal last night titled The Racism Excuse, where the author discusses the Democrats intention to blame an Obama loss on racism. The author cites a recent article by Jacob Weisberg:
In this week’s Newsweek (and on Slate), Jacob Weisberg reasoned that only some “crazy irrationality over race” could prevent Mr. Obama from winning the White House. If he does win, America will have reached post-prejudice Nirvana. “If Obama loses, our children will grow up thinking of equal opportunity as a myth,” Mr. Weisberg continued. “To the rest of the world, a rejection of the promise he represents wouldn’t just be an odd choice by the United States. It would be taken for what it would be: sign and symptom of a nation’s historical decline.” Wow. Vote for Barack, or America is as irredeemable as many foreigners believe.
In closing the author wonders “Do Democrats really think so little of their fellow Americans?” I do not believe that is the question which should be asked though, the real question is “Do Democrats really think so little of their fellow Democrats”
This was to be the year of the Democrat, as most political analysts agrees Republicans will lose 10 or more seats in the House and 2 to 4 seats in the Senate. This is to be expected as the number of Americans who identify themselves as Democrats was 14 percentage points higher than the number who said they were Republicans in a recent survey. If Obama were to lose the election come November, they need only look as far as their own constituency to answer the question, “Why?”
Liberals, or Progressives as they now prefer to be called, continue to view the world in black and white, with the answer to all questions being unequivocal. In the case of an Obama loss, those on the left will ultimately decide there is no explanation other than racism and will point to the exit polls showing McCain’s overwhelming support amongst white males. Democrats will make every attempt to portray the loss as a sign that Republicans are racist, refusing to vote for Obama because of his skin color.
This is the unfortunate consequence of looking upon the world as being black and white, those are the only colors you will see. For many Progressives, they do not see a Democrat running against a Republican for President; they see a young black man running against an old white man for President. It is based on this simplistic view that their own vote is decided, and they are under the assumption the rest of America will look upon the candidates in the same way. If the black candidate were to lose, he would not lose because he lacked legislative experience, it would not be because he lacked foreign policy or military experience, and it certainly would not be because of his questionable tax policy. In the end they will tell you the black candidate lost because he is black.
This brings me to my question, do the Democrats really think so little of themselves as to believe that Obama’s race will be the determining factor in how their constituency votes? Currently Obama only has the support of 78% of registered Democrats, down from 81% 81% earlier this month. With almost 1 out 4 Democrats not supporting the parties candidate, and liberals proclaiming that not supporting Obama amounts to being racist, the question remains, do Democrats believe that almost one quarter of their own party is made up of racists?
