Conservatives Grow Wary Of Mixing Religion And Politics

A new survey released yesterday show that the number of social conservatives who believe churches should stay out of politics has risen dramatically over the past four years. The survey conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, shows 50% of conservatives now feel churches and other religious organizations should keep out of politics, up from 30% in 2004.

Inevitably some will argue that this new survey is a victory for seperationists who believe there should be an impenetrable wall between the church and the state, however that is not the case. As a social conservative I have always felt that the church itself should have no influence in politics, however the ideals the church instills in people inevitably will. When a social conservative proclaims they cannot vote for a pro-choice candidate, this is not because the church has denounced that candidate, this is because the individual views abortion as a sin and will not cast a vote which may enable that sin.
