MoveOn.org Protesting Low Gas Prices?
MoveOn’s newest cause célèbre is high oil prices, or more specifically high gasoline prices. This week they staged an event on Capitol Hill designed to “highlight the GOP’s extensive ties to Big Oil.” Presumably, the organizations intention was to declare the rising oil prices are solely the fault of the GOP, and if we were to elect more Democrats it would serve to reduce prices. To be frank, I am not exactly sure what the point of the event was, and judging by the response from some of MoveOn’s own activists, I doubt they completely understood why they were there either.
Amanda Carpenter links to a video from Americans for Prosperity who were at the event as well, and the comments from the MoveOn crowd are certainly amusing, albeit in a frightening way.
There, AFP members handed MoveOn supporters a mock $8 bill and said “this is what Al Gore wants you to pay for gas.”
An older man dressed in an Obama shirt said, “This is too cheap! This is too cheap!” Waving the eight dollar bill he said, “Let’s get it up to ten! Let’s get it up to ten bucks.”
Frank asked the man, “How do you think that will affect the single mom who needs to fill up her minivan?”
The Obama-supporter replied, “A single mom probably doesn’t need a minivan.”
Another man, wearing an Obama pin, told Frank, “I’m hoping we have less supply and more demand, absolutely” because “then people won’t be able to afford it.”
For anyone still under the assumption that Nancy Pelosi wishes to reduce oil prices, I beg of you to join the rest of us in reality. Pelosi is a far left Democrat, representing a far left district, hence many of her constituents would probably agree that gas prices are still too cheap. This is why she refuses to bring a vote on the Republican proposed energy bill, even though she told her fellow Democrats that it would be ok for them to speak out in favor of the GOP proposal, if it earned them political points. The fact is Pelosi would probably lose votes from the people in her district who believe the minimal positive environmental affects of high oil prices outweigh the devastating economic affects.
Of course these are the people who like Al Gore, can afford those increased prices. The impact to the limousine liberal crowd is minimal, while the single mother taking her son to little league is devastated by it. This is precisely what many Democrats want however, the devastation of the lower middle class. The more economic hardships faced by the American people, the easier it will be to convince them that government handouts are the solution to all of life’s ills.
But then again, it could simply be elitism at work. It is quite possible that they simply feel that owning your own automobile is a status symbol, and one not worthy of us commoners, after all that is why we have buses. As one MoveOn activist so bluntly put it, “A single mom probably doesn’t need a minivan”.
