Obama Says Lay Off My Wife

“For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country.” These are the words of Michelle Obama spoken in February while campaigning for her husband Barack. The implication behind the words is quite obvious, as Michelle Obama is stating that prior to her husband’s Presidential run, she lacked pride in her country. The Tennessee GOP recently released an ad in which they asked residents to declare how long that have had pride in their country.

Barack Obama has apparantly taken offense to the fact that his wife’s words are being revurberated in an ad against him. In an interview yesterday he told the GOP to “Lay off my wife”

At issue now is wether or not Obama believes that spouses should be off limits in Presidential campaigns, even if said spouse is an active campainger. Ironically earlier this year Barack Obama spoke out against statements made by Bill Clinton, calling them “troubling” and “false”, and during the same interview stated that his wife is a tremendous asset on the campaign trail.

Of course that was three months ago, and much has changed since then. Michelle Obama has hurt the Obama campaign more than she has helped it. From her ‘pride comment’, to her calling America “downright mean”, she has given Republicans a reason to attack her in the general election.

If Barack Obama wishes for his wife to be off limits in the future, he must first make her off limits in his campaign. As long as she continues to speak on his behalf, her words will continue to be associated with him. The sad truth is, had Michelle Obama been a campaign advisor to Barack rather than his wife, she most likely would have been forced to resign over her comments.

  1. And this makes Cindy McCain and her flat-out refusal to release her tax returns, which will reveal the McCains to be the underhanded, profiteering, beer-purveying pigs they are, fair game, too, I suppose? Or… are we going to grumble and kvetch about that, too?

    Please.

  2. The point here is that Michelle Obama is actively campaigning for Barack, so anything said on the campaign trail, is fair game. The same as if she had simply been a campaign advisor, she represents the campaign. If Obama does not want her words used against him, tell her to stay home.
