Obama’s Sexist Remark?

In the world of politically correct politics, very few words are considered safe. Thinking back to Barack Obama being referred to as "articulate", and the way the complimentary word was twisted and turned to somehow be derogatory, I can only laugh at how thin skinned our country has become. Just last month Rep. Geoff Davis (R-Ky.) felt compelled to apologize for calling Obama 'boy', which the media inferred as having racial implications. We shall soon find out if what is good for the goose is good for the gander, as Senator Obama recently used what could be construed as a sexist comment to a female reporter.

For the record, I do not believe calling a woman "sweetie" is sexist, although under these particular circumstances it may have been uncalled for. The reporter certainly seemed to be offended by the comment, combined with the fact that Obama simultaneously brushed off her question as being unimportant. Time will tell if Senator Obama is held to the same standards when dealing with the opposite sex, as he seems to hold those of the opposite race when they deal with him.

Hat Tip to AllahPundit who remarks, "He dropped this on the one member of the media who wouldn't coo and squeal like an infant at being addressed by him this way."

Update: Obama has apologized to the reporter via voicemail:

Obama apologized in a voicemail he left on Agar’s cell phone at 3:16 p.m:

“Hi Peggy. This is Barack Obama. I’m calling to apologize on two fronts. One was you didn’t get your question answered and I apologize. I thought that we had set up interviews with all the local stations. I guess we got it with your station but you weren’t the reporter that got the interview. And so, I broke my word. I apologize for that and I will make up for it.

“Second apology is for using the word ’sweetie.’ That’s a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front. Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next.”

  1. If a guy calls me “sweetie” or “honey” I feel looked down upon. I feel like he is belittling me and I do not feel equal to him.

  2. Well, he showed class with his apology (darn it!).
