Video:Monica Conyers Debates An 8th Grader

I found this video via Fark.com and could not resist sharing it. It is a follow up to Monica Conyers outburst at an April 11th hearing in which she called Council President Ken Cockrel “Shrek”.

The argument began when Conyers asked an independent attorney who was testifying if the council could be sued by Detroit residents for approving the $8.4-million lawsuit settlement.

Councilwoman JoAnn Watson said: “They can sue you; I voted no.”

Conyers told Watson to stop interrupting and disrespecting her. She added: “We all know how you voted; you don’t have to keep repeating it.”

Moments later, Conyers interrupted Council President Ken Cockrel as he was questioning Carl Edwards, the Detroit attorney. Cockrel reminded Conyers that he had the floor and banged his gavel repeatedly.

Conyers railed: “You’re not my Daddy. You’re not going to disrespect me. Grow up! Control your house and learn how to treat women.”

Cockrel told Conyers that she was “one to talk.”

Conyers also made repeated mocking reference to Cockrel as Shrek, the green, grumpy and rotund ogre from the animated film.

Monica Conyers recently sat down with 8th graders to discuss the matter, with one of them having to remind her that she is an adult. Priceless!

“But your an adult, we have to look up to you… This is an adult calling another adult Shrek? Thats something a second grader would do”

Update: It turn out Conyers has since invited Kierra Bell, 13, and the other students to city hall give them an award:

Humbled, Conyers called the children to city hall to give them the award, apparently in admiration of their chutzpah.

As for Bell, she has become something of a media darling, a 15-minute breath of fresh air and a symbol of hope for tomorrow’s leadership. Since her dressing-down of the councilwoman, she has appeared on television and radio. Perfect strangers in city hall slapped her on the back and hugged her warmly, telling Bell to “keep it real” and “always be you.” The girl seemed shy and discombobulated by the attention.

With Detroit currently showing one of the worst leaderships in all of the country (and that is saying alot), the people of Motown should be so lucky as to have Kierra Bell on their city council in a few years.
