The Pelosi Premium
Prior to taking control of the House of Representatives during the 2006 mid term elections, Nancy Pelosi made it a point to continually remind Americans how high gasoline prices were. Aside from reminding us how much we were paying at the pump, she assured us that Democrats had a plan to lower prices. The House Republican Conference reminds us of these promises, and outlines the results:
The price of gas was $2.33 when Democrats took control of the House, and have soared to $3.40 today, with prices expected to reach $4 by the summer. Of course Congress only has a limited control over gasoline prices, so the recent rise in price cannot be placed squarely on their shoulders. We can however blame them for making false promises full well knowing they had no intention to pass any form of legislation which had a stated purpose of reducing gas prices.
In fact, to the contrary, Democrats seem intent on raising prices further through faulty legislation. Take for example Rep John Dingell proposing to raise gasoline taxes by 50 cents per gallon in an effort to curb global warming. Mandating increased biofuel production while penalizing domestic oil companies has also taken its toll on gasoline prices, much to the dismay of Americans who believed Pelosi’s promise of lower prices.
Ask Nancy Pelosi to explain how taxing gasoline refined in the United States at higher rates than gasoline refined overseas could have a positive impact on gasoline prices to get an idea how limited her knowledge is on the subject.
