An Obama Win Could Stifle Racial Progress
For those of you Democrats out there who may still be undecided between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, here is yet another reason to choose Clinton. An Obama Presidency would actually stifle racial “progress”, at least according to Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, (D-Mo).
Cleaver said he thought the Illinois senator will win the Democratic presidential nomination, but that doesn’t mean the work will be done trying to improve race relations in America.
“I think whites would say, ‘How could anybody say we were racist, that we have any racist residue when you look what we just did (potentially electing Obama)?’ And African Americans would say, ‘Look at what we just did. So now we ought to have unblocked access to all of our dreams, all of our hopes,’” Cleaver said.
After seeing this, I was forced to pause for a moment to reflect on what I had just read. Was Cleaver implying that this newly instilled hope was a bad thing? Yes he was!
“And I think there would be great disappointment when they saw some issue of race surfacing. It would be like, ‘Oh my goodness. I thought we were past that.’”
There you have it America, in this eyes of Emanuel Cleaver it is better to not have an African American as President, in order to avoid other African Americans being disappointed when their dreams do not come true!
The truth is, many in the African American community would choose to use an Obama Presidency as a positive message for their children. They would remind their children that all men are indeed created equal, and with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible. Mr. Cleaver on the other hand would presumably take the opposite approach with his children, reminding them that just because Obama had risen to the highest office in the land, does not mean their own dreams will ever come to fruition.
