Back in November I wrote about the SAVE Act which had been authored by two freshman Congressman Reps. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.). At the time I applauded both of these gentlemen for proposing common sense immigration reform focusing on employment enforcement, interior enforcement and increased border security.

One of the more controversial provisions would make the so-called E-Verify program mandatory, a move that raises major concerns with industry officials.

Proponents of the E-Verify program say it allows employers an inexpensive way to ensure they are hiring legally documented workers.

The Shuler-Bilbray bill would also close existing loopholes that allow illegal immigrants to use the same Social Security number and will require information-sharing between the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration and the IRS.

In order to increase border security, the bill seeks to provide an 8,000-agent increase for the U.S. Border Patrol and an expansion of the investigative abilities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

There are currently 136 co-sponsors to this bill including 47 Democrats and 89 Republicans. The common sense provisions of the bill however have not swayed the Democratic leadership, with Nancy Pelosi and company looking to do anything possible to kill this bill.

The Washington Times reports that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and other House Democratic leaders want to poison the bill by attaching an amnesty amendment to it.

The amnesty amendment would give illegals a 5 year visa and employers immunity from prosecution for using illegal labor. In other words, the enforcement which Americans have been demanding with regards to our immigration laws would once again be ignored.

Bilbray believes the amnesty agenda in Congress is designed to enlarge the Democratic electorate. “You’ve got Ms. Pelosi and the traditional Democrat groups basically wanting to see this population of 20 million illegals voting for Democrats,” he states. “They want to give them residency, citizenship, and register them to vote so they can use this illegal population as a political bloc that’s behooving [sic] to them because they’re the one who empowered them with the votes.”

This is why so many Americans hate politics, more specifically politicians. The SAVE act has no provisions for deporting the millions of illegals which are here, yet Pelosi wants to add an amendment that would guarantee they would not feel the need to leave under their own free will.
