More Identity Politics From the Democrats
Democrats in the Memphis area’s 9th District of Tennessee received quite a shock in their mail this week as they received what can only be referred to as an anti-Semitic, even racist flyer speaking out against Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) The flyer, as pictured on the left speaks of Steve Cohen and “the Jews” as hating Jesus, and speaks of the need for a Black Christian to face him in the primary.
Circulated by an African-American minister from Murfreesboro Tenn., which isn’t even in Cohen’s district, the literature encourages other black leaders in Memphis to “see to it that one and ONLY one black Christian faces this opponent of Christ and Christianity in the 2008 election.”
The flier was sent out by an African-American minister to try to defeat Rep. Cohen. Cohen’s main opponent in the August 5 Democratic primary in his predominantly African-American district is Nikki Tinker, who is black. The Commercial Appeal wrote an editorial in Wednesday’s paper condemning Tinker for not speaking out against the anti-Semitic literature.
The paper wrote that the “real motive” behind the ministers’ attacks was revealed later by Rev. Robert Poindexter who, according to the Commercial Appeal, said of Cohen: “He’s not black and he can’t represent me, that’s just the bottom line.”
I wonder what Rev. Poindexter would say if a white male stated that “Barack Obama is not white and can’t represent me”. I am sure even before he had a chance to speak out on the issue, the NAACP and a dozen other “civil liberties groups” would have been all over it. Steven Cohen’s opponent Nikki Tinker declined to return a phone call about the flier, leaving me with the impression that while she may not approve of the message, she certainly does not condemn it. Once again we witness the double standard which is allowed to exist in the Democratic party, proving the pendulum does not swing both ways.
This is the unfortunate outcome of political pandering by Democrats throughout the years focusing on the needs of certain ethnic groups as opposed to the needs of Americans in general.
Moe Lane at RedState had this to say:
Bad apples don’t spoil the barrel, and all that: so all we need to have happen is for the national and State Democratic Party come down upon this like a ton of bricks. That would explicitly include Senator Barack Obama, by the way. Why? Because he’s Cohen’s guy, that’s why. One Obama’s super-delegates, in fact: that sort of relationship goes both ways, although I don’t really need to tell an Illinois Democratic politico this. Besides, we keep getting told about “hope” and “change;” what better way to have him actually show some than by coming down to TN’s 9th District and giving a good impression of the wrath of God against those who would hold a man’s religion against him? Even if they are themselves African-American
While I admire his optimism, I highly doubt you will see Obama or the Democratic party even make reference to this story unless it were to be picked up by the national media.
