South Carolina Primary Predictions

I did fairly well with my predictions on the Michigan primary earlier this week so I figured i would take a stab at the South Carolina primary now. As a Fred Thompson supporter, South Carolina has been my most anticipated primary, as he has basically staked his entire campaign on the Palmetto State. With that in mind, I am hoping I do not overestimate Thompson support in South Carolina as I did in Michigan. Anyway, here are my predictions:

Republicans

  • John McCain - 27%
  • Fred Thompson - 24%
  • Mike Huckabee - 21%
  • Mitt Romney - 18%
  • Ron Paul - 5%
  • Rudy Giuliani - 4%

Democrats

  • Barack Obama - 40%
  • Hillary Clinton - 34%
  • John Edwards - 17%:
  • Dennis Kucinich - 2%

Update:With 93% of the precincts it looks like once again I grossly overestimated Thompson’s support. Although a win in SC wasn’t necessary in order to build momentum going into Florida and super Tuesday, at the very least Thompson needed a strong third place finish to remain competitive. Thompson is currently at 16% trailing McCain and Huckabee, both of whom received 30% or better. This was hardly the showing Fredheads had anticipated from the State Thompson staked his campaign in.

As much as I hate to say it, it appears Thompson can no longer win the nomination, and a likely endorsement of John McCain seems forthcoming. With McCain currently leading the national polls I can only hope that Fred will only offer his endorsement to McCain under the condition of being his running mate for the November election.

  1. Fred supporter here……but I would have to be a pessimist in saying that I think this might be the end of the road.

    Gawd I hope I am wrong……
