CNN: Thompson Does Not Have Hunting License

Thompson Does Not Have Hunting License

Must have been a slow day in news yesterday as CNN ran a story referencing the fact that Fred Thompson does not have a hunting license.

Fred Thompson has made a point of visiting gun shops and gun shows while hitting the campaign trail in New Hampshire and South Carolina, usually with camera crews in tow.

But Thompson said Wednesday he does not have a hunting license, nor has be been hunting recently.

“It’s been too long, it’s been too long,” Thompson told CNN Wednesday.

Asked if he has a hunting license, Thompson said he currently does not.

Thompson, an ardent defender of Second Amendment rights, was appearing in Columbia to pick up the endorsement of South Carolina Citizens for Life.

I am not exactly sure why CNN believes there is a story here, or even if they do believe there is one at all. I certainly hope they do not mean to imply that Thompson cannot be a true supporter of the Second Amendment if he does not own a hunting license, because that would be ridiculous. After all does a woman have to have an abortion in order to claim she is pro-choice? Of course not!

The Second Amendment was not added to the Constitution in order to protect the rights of recreational hunters. The purpose of the Second Amendment was to allow citizens to protect themselves from a tyrannical government. Having completed their own revolution against a tyrannical government, they knew the value of an armed citizenry. As Thomas Jefferson said “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government”.

The fact that Fred Thompson does not go deer hunting is a non issue.
