Progressive Movement or Totalitarian Movement?
Open Left posted an article a few days back which has seem to fly under the radar among Conservative bloggers, and I thank Dan Riehl at NewsBusters for bringing it to my attention. The article discusses different types of reforms necessary in order to “make America a more progressive place”. Unfortunately the issues the author speaks of do not represent just a small radical group of leftists, on the contrary we are seeing some of these issues seep into the Democratic party’s talking points. I would like to discuss only a few of them at this time, but feel free to click on the above link to read them all.
The Employee Free Choice Act, that would, ideally, increase union density and collective bargaining power in America. Union members are much more likely to support progressive economic policies, and to vote Democratic, than other non-union workers. This would effectively create an ideological shift within the American workplace that would favor progressives, as long as it came with union leadership willing to ramp up new organizing efforts.
I have written about the Employee Free Choice Act in the past, and how it destroys the democratic process. There have been sever polls (which I cited in my prior articles) which show a majority of Americans do not want to unionize. This is why progressives want to get rid of the secret ballot elections, in order to force them to unionize and pay their dues to the same unions who then donate to the Democratic party.
Reversing Corporate Media Consolidation. Using improved ownership regulation of American media to help destabilize the impact of the Republican Noise Machine, and create a more diverse, responsive national media, is another key progressive feedback loop.
This has to be my favorite one. Progressives are apparantly looking for improved regulations to quiet Conservatives speech. I can only assume this means going even further than the Fairness Doctrine which would only silence conservatives on the radio.
Colonial Reform. Perhaps I am using overly provocative language to describe this one, but granting full congressional representation to those areas of America not current represented by full voting members in Congress would be a big step forward for progressives. This obviously includes anti-Republican strongholds in D.C. and Puerto Rico, but should also include territories like Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. These are not places that are particularly friendly to the values of the conservative movement, and granting them equal representation within their own country would expand progressive and Democratic power long-term.
This idea to “expand progressive and Democratic power long-term” is not only idiotic, it is un-constitutional. Read, “The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each state,” (Article 1, section 3) and “The House of Representatives shall be composed of members chosen every second year by the people of the several states, and the electors in each state shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the state legislature” (Article 1, section 2). Progressives, in order to gain more votes, wish to give voting rights to non-States, even though it is forbidden by the Constitution.
Re-locating government spending. It isn’t a secret that the conservative economy is fueled significantly by government hand-outs in the form of military industrial complex spending, reliance on oil companies, “faith based initiatives,” and tax breaks / loopholes for corporations and the wealthy alike. De-funding the conservative economy, and re-locating spending in programs Americans won’t want to give up, such as universal health care or cheaper, clean energy investment, would to at least some extent shift the economic balance of power away from conservatives and toward progressives.
Simply stated, the more money the Democrats are willing to steal from the rich to give to the poor, the more likely the poor will vote for them. The fact the author refers to Government handouts in the form of tax breaks shows how little respect many progressives have for earned income. When the government gives a person or corporation a tax break, they are not giving a “hand-out” they are allowing you to keep more of your earned money. The progressive movement would like to see more of that earned money being confiscated by the government so it can than be redistributed to spending programs that promote “equality”.
The progressive movement is all about giving more power to the government, and expanding the nanny state. Millions of Americans actually believe (or want to believe) this will be good for the our country over the long term. These are the same people however that complain about job outsourcing and low wages. Ironically prior to the New Deal error when the government started with their ‘wonderful’ entitlement programs, there was no job outsourcing and Americans were some of the highest paid workers in the world.
As our Government confiscates more and more wealth from corporations that have earned it, more and more corporations will continue moving overseas, and taking American jobs with them.

Here’s something else you might want to look into, it’s from an article in the Charlotte Observer that ran a few weeks ago on the SPEED Network. It’s about diversity on television. Essentially, those that want ‘a la carte’ pricing on TV (buying each channel individually, not as a package) ignore the fact that there would be much less diversity on TV. It’s just another example of silencing opinions in the media - only this time it’s on TV. Check out the article.

Charles,
I’m also concerned that this is a veiled attempt to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine or programs like it.
I’ve done some work with NAB, and we’ve guarded against those in Washington who want to resurrect the Doctrine. But I think the Open Left types understand that the Doctrine is politically dead.
So, they’re trying to reinstate it through backdoor channels like “media reform.” Keep an eye out for anytime they mention “reform” or “media consolidation.”
