Fred Thompson on Global Warming

With the recent addition of Fred Thompson to the race for the Republican Presidential nomination, I thought it would be prudent to do a little research on his views of economic and social issues. Currently running either second or third in most polls conducted, Fred has a realistic opportunity of becoming the party’s candidate for President. I currently favor Fred Thompson over the other candidates but must admit I know little about his political views, other than the fact that many have called him the most conservative of the candidates. With that in mind I have decided to write a series of articles over the course of the next month detailing his stand on the issues.

The first issue I have looked at is by no means the most important issue which will be tackled by the next President, but it is something I consider important as a means of testing a candidates ability to think independently. Many politicians have watched Al Gore’s ‘documentary’ on Global Warming and have accepted his conclusions as fact, without doing their own research. For that reason I have decided to examine Fred Thompson’s views on Global Warming and I didn’t have to look too far.

Here is a commentary he did on a radio program back in March:

Some people think that our planet is suffering from a fever. Now scientists are telling us that Mars is experiencing its own planetary warming: Martian warming. It seems scientists have noticed recently that quite a few planets in our solar system seem to be heating up a bit, including Pluto.

NASA says the Martian South Pole’s “ice cap” has been shrinking for three summers in a row. Maybe Mars got its fever from earth. If so, I guess Jupiter’s caught the same cold, because it’s warming up too, like Pluto.

This has led some people, not necessarily scientists, to wonder if Mars and Jupiter, non signatories to the Kyoto Treaty, are actually inhabited by alien SUV-driving industrialists who run their air-conditioning at 60 degrees and refuse to recycle.

Silly, I know, but I wonder what all those planets, dwarf planets and moons in our SOLAR system have in common. Hmmmm. SOLAR system. Hmmmm. Solar? I wonder. Nah, I guess we shouldn’t even be talking about this. The science is absolutely decided. There’s a consensus.

Ask Galileo.

Hat Tip: National Review

Nice to see a politician not only accept the possibility that the sun may be the cause of the minute temperature increases, but to endorse the theory publicly. Some will argue with me that it is irrelevant wether Global Warming is man made because efforts to reduce CO2 admissions will clean up the environment and reduce our dependence on foreign oil and that is a good thing. Which is true.

The reason I will not endorse a candidate that does not speak out against the man made Global Warming theory however is not because I am a “cheerleader for the oil industry” as I have been called, it is because I have seen what happens when politicians get together to try and reduce CO2 emissions.

For example, the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act which amends the Clean Air Act to set forth provisions concerning global warming pollution emissions. Co-sponsored by both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, this bill is estimated to impose a tax-equivalent of $366 billion annually, or more than $4,500 per family of four, by 2015. And the annual costs will grow after 2015.

This is the essence of the Global Warming argument, if you believe in the man made theory you are endorsing higher taxes which will inevitably be imposed. I would much rather endorse Fred Thompson than junk science!
