After more than 1 year hiding out in a church which was providing sanctuary, and 10 years after first being deported from the United States, Elvira Arellano has finally been deported again. For conservatives and moderates who looked upon Arellano as the poster child for failed border control, this is nothing more than a moral victory. After all, 1 out of 12 million under normal circumstances would not even be worthy of a footnote, much less a front page story. Elvira’s story is anything but a run of the mill immigration story however, as no other immigrant has so blatanly and publicy given the middle finger to our Government and its law enforcement.

The problem with the Arellano story though, and the reason it will not die anytime soon is that she has an 8 year old son Saul who was born in the United States and is therby a U.S. citizen. Due to the fact that Elvira gave birth to her son in this country, many on the left wish to ignore that she enterred illegally (twice), used a false social security number to get a job, then subsequently defied a deportation order. All that matters to the bleeding hearts is this little boy, and how he should not be seperated from his mother.

Well that is a wonderful sentiment, and not an easy one to attack. It would be difficult for any politician to declare publicly they do not care about the welfare of the child all that matters is his mother broke the law and should face the consequences. After playing their sad violins, the liberals would announce that it is not right to punish the child for the wrongdoings of the mother, which of course it isn’t. But who is actually punishing this child?

Excuse me for not shedding a tear for the Arellano family, Elvira was given the option to take her child with her when she was deported and elected to leave him in the United States to be raised by freinds. Saul will now recieve all benefits any other American citizen recieves including free education. As Saul gets older he will have the opportunity to prosper in this country just as his mother would have wanted. I am sure there are millions of children throughout the world who would love this sort of “punishment”.

The fact remains Elvira Arellano violated our country’s laws and has been dealt with in a just (although not swift) manner. Her son Saul, do to the unfortunate wording, and subsequent interpretation of the 14th Amendment, will now benefit from his mothers actions.

Imagine that, apparantly it is a human right to live in the United States! All these years I though we were a sovereign nation.
