American Morality

For the next year and a half the media will be in a frenzy over the upcoming Presidential elections, with particular attention being paid to most recent Gallup Polls. For those out there who do not follow politics closely, these Gallup Polls will have little or no meaning, but for the rest of us, the results of these polls could be the deciding factor wether or not we donate money to a particular candidate. A new poll has recently come out which I think all Americans should take notice to, because it gives us an insight into the morals of our neighbors.

The term “morality” comes from the Latin moralitas which means proper behavior, making it difficult to judge a persons “morality”. What one person would consider proper behavior, another may not. What one person would consider morally indefensible, another may consider it a god given right. The newest gallup poll questions Americans on the morality of 16 social issues and I must admit the results are somewhat surprising (at least to me).

Some of the results are not surprising in and of themselves, it is when they are compared to one another a glaring insight into the American psyche is reached. For example, only 26% of those polled believe it to be morally wrong to have a divorce, while 32% believe it is morally wrong to gamble. This means at least 6% of Americans feel it is acceptable to disregard a promise of “til death do us part”, but unacceptable to bet $100 on the Super Bowl. The more striking disparities appear when the results are broken down by group.

The Conservatives polled felt a mojority of these social issues were morally wrong, with the exception of the death penalty (no surprise there), medical testing on animals, and buying and wearing animal fur. On the liberal side, there was one item that specifically caught my attention, and that is the comparison between abortion and animal fur. A 67% majority felt abortion was morally acceptable, while only 52% felt wearing animal fur was acceptable.

The moral of the story? In liberal America the life of an animal is more sacred than the life of an unborn human.
