Democrats Prefer to Remain Ignorant on Iraq

It wasn’t to long ago Harry Reid told reporters “This war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything, as is shown by the extreme violence in Iraq this week”. Senator Reid was referring to recent suicide bombings in Iraq. Senator Reid has since received a lot of criticism from conservatives, some even calling his statements treasonous. While I personally do not consider his statement to be one of treason, I do certainly feel it was ignorant.

For starters, one need only look at the Democrats sources of information to show they lack the intel (short for intelligence) to proclaim a loss in Iraq. Real Clear Politics reported 2 days ago:

What’s curious is that congressional Democrats don’t seem much interested in what’s actually happening in Iraq. The commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, returns to Washington this week, but last week Pelosi’s office said “scheduling conflicts” prevented him from briefing House members. Two days later, the members-only meeting was scheduled, but the episode brings to mind the fact that Pelosi and other top House Democrats skipped a Pentagon videoconference with Petraeus on March 8.

WizBangBlog reported earlier this month that only one Democrat, Senator Carl Levin met with General Patraeus when given the chance.

Today ABC news reporting on the spending bill titles their article Democrats Predict They Can Win Iraq Vote, while playing down what I considered the most important item.

Pelosi was not expected to attend Wednesday’s briefing by Petraeus, instead opting for a 30-minute phone call with the general Tuesday evening. Reid was expected to attend the Senate session.

Earlier in the article Pelosi was quoted as saying:

“For the first time, the president will have to be accountable for this war in Iraq,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Tuesday. “And he does not want to face that reality.”

The reality Mrs. Pelosi is speaking of, is the Democrats intend on doing everything in their power to “lose” the war in Iraq prior to the next election. If we were to be successful in Iraq prior to the 2008 elections, the Democrats would have no chance of taking back the White House and they know it.

I am aware the majority of Americans are in favor of a withdrawal from Iraq, it is impossible to read the NY Times without being reminded of that fact. By demanding a troop withdrawal as part of the spending bill, the Democrats are simply playing to the crowd. Pelosi and company need to be reminded however, that is not what they were elected to do. Members of Congress are elected to not only represent the best interests of their constituents, but the Country as well.

By refusing to meet with General Petraeus, the Democrats are telling the American people they prefer to base their legislation on Gallup polls rather than intelligence.
