WBC Cancels Virginia Tech Protest
Earlier this week I told you about the freaks at the Westboro Baptist Church planning a protest at the funerals for those murdered at Virginia Tech. Today I bring you good news, Mike Gallagher has offered them 3 hours of national air time to spew their hate in exchange for them cancelling their planned protest.
Here is their press release (which as I said earlier I will not link to):
Westboro Baptist Church
(WBC Chronicles - Since 1955)
3701 SW 12th St. Topeka, Kansas 66604 785-273-0325
Religious Orhion and Bible Commentarv on Current Events
Friday, April 20,2007
Westboro Baptist Church hereby cancels
all pending pickets, and agrees not to
schedule future pickets, related to The
Virginia Tech Massacre, on the following
terms and conditions; to wit:
In consideration for 3 hours of national radio time
with Mike Gallagher on his National Radio Show -
next Tuesday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon
New York time - Westboro Baptist Church has
agreed to cancel all pickets now pending and not
to schedule future pickets related to
The Virginia Tech Massacre.
Westboro Baptist Church representatives will
appear in studio with Mr. Gallagher, and will
freely discuss WBC’s religious position relative to
such tragedies as The Virginia Tech Massacre.
I would like to thank Mike Gallagher for allowing the family and freinds of those killed to mourn in peace, without disruption from the Westboro Baptist’s. At the same time however, I would also like to ask everyone to boycott his show Tuesday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Fred Phelp’s does not deserve a national podium to spew his hate from, and if everyone changes the station at 9 a.m. he will not have one.

This is called extortion. It is against the law, and is a federal crime. These people should be prosecuted, not given a forum. What is the U.S. attorney in Kansas doing about this?
Angela,
Unfortunately this would not be considered extortion, nor any other type of crime. It only would have been considered extoriton if they had said something to the effect of “we will disrupt the funeral unless you give us…”
Although it is very possible they only announced their intention to protest because they knew Mike Gallagher would offer them airtime, just as he did when they announced their protest of the funerals for the Amish girls who were killed, it is not considered extortion.
